Having a Facebook page for your business is a great way to interact and engage with your potential and existing clients. Facebook also is a platform with almost  2.5 billion monthly active users so it offers a great opportunity to expand your businesses reach and tap into audiences that you may not have been able to before. In addition to all of this, most search engines index business Facebook pages, which allows your business Facebook page to appear in search results, this, in turn, will only increase traffic to your business!

Getting Started

To get started on building a Facebook business page, you will first need to set up a personal Facebook account if you have not got one already. Once this is done, log in to your Facebook account and you’re ready to get going!

Setting up the page

For this tutorial I will be setting up a Facebook page for my mock up company “Web Demon”.

Once you have logged in to your Facebook account you’ll want to navigate to the top left of the page where there is a button that says “Create” Click on this and a drop-down will appear. On this drop-down, there should be an option called “Page”. You’ll want to click on this option.

Once you have done that you’ll be brought to a new page where you can select from two different types of pages, either one for a business or brand or for a community of public figures. We’ll be selecting “business or brand”.

Once you’ve clicked the “get started” button underneath the “Business or brand” option you’ll then be able to type in the page name (the name of your business) and the category (the specific sector that your business is in e.g. Landscaping.) Once you have filled in this information click on the Continue button.

Once you’ve done this you’ll be taken to the next step which is adding a profile picture, for this many companies will use their business logo. If you don’t have one available you can skip this step and upload a profile photo at a later date. The same applies for the next step which is uploading a cover photo, again you can skip this and come back to it later if you don’t have a cover photo to hand.

Finishing Touches

Your page should now be up and just about ready to go, however before you get out there and start publishing your first posts there are a few basic things that you can add to your page to help customers find you and help your page stand out.

Adding a customer @username

The first thing you should do is add a custom @username. This means that people can search for your business directly in the Facebook search bar e.g. by searching @webdemon to bring them directly to the Web Demon Facebook page. This minimises the amount of time people will spend trying to find your page and help with clients find your business quickly and efficiently.

To add a custom @username is fairly straightforward. In the top right corner below your businesses profile picture there will be an option saying “Create page @username”. When you click on this a new box will appear where you can enter in the @username of your choice. Try and pick a username that is either an exact match to your business name or as close as possible to it. This will simply help customers find you quicker. Another tip is to avoid usernames that are too long and complicated. Having a short and to the point username will prevent people making mistakes when entering it into the search bar and help you make sure that as many people as possible who search your username will end up on your company facebook page e.g. the username I selected was @webdemonuk.

Once this is done a dialog box will appear letting you know that your @username has been created for your page.

Adding your company information

The next thing I would suggest adding is some of your important business details so that people can get in touch with you or find your website. You can access this by simply navigating to the menu on the left side of your facebook page and selecting the “About” option.

Once you have clicked on the About option you’ll be taken to the About page. Here you can navigate down to the Contact Details section of the page and enter in your business information like your company phone number, email address and website. This will allow customers who discover you via Facebook to easily get in touch with you and in turn boost enquiries and new business!
